About The Center
Founded by parents in 1950, The Center is a private, not-for-profit
United Way Agency. The Center is guided by a Board of Governors.
In addition, a Board of Trustees charts the course of fundraising
activities at Foundation for the Retarded. The Center provides
opportunities which promote individual choice, personal
growth, and community involvement for persons with mental
retardation and those needing similar services so that they
may achieve their maximum potential. The Center's Programs respond
to the individual needs of each person served. There are
three program locations that enlist the support of 225
employees and over 250 volunteers. These resources enable
over 650 people with developmental disabilities to build
skills and remain active in the community.
The Center provides adult training and employment services for
people with developmental disabilities. Job training and
employment includes community based "work crews"
and supported employment. The Adult Activity Center serves
adults with multiple disabilities and/or medically fragile
conditions. This program provides enrichment
and community activities.
Community Living offers respite care and housing options
for adults with mental retardation. The Center community living
options include: Cullen Residence Hall, Supported Living
Apartment Program and Willow River Farms. Willow River Farms,
where the ride begins and ends, offers adults with developmental
disabilities a family-based home environment, productive
work, wholesome activities, and a community that fosters
personal growth.
Lifecare offers parents an opportunity to preplan for the
needs and ongoing care of their child. Lifecare is offered
through Foundation for the Retarded.
Young at Heart offers semi-retired adults and the elderly
a full and active retirement program.
Volunteers come as friends to participate in a wide range
of activities with the people served at The Center. We invite you
to share your talents as a Center volunteer.
